About the Ice Giant

Many of the drawings featured on this website are for a future science-fiction-fairy-tale-story-book called The Ice Giant.

Limited Edition prints are reproduced at approximately the same size as the original drawings. Once these sell out, there will never be any more produced. They are all printed in house, under the complete control of the artist with archival paper and archival pigment inks. They are only available officially through this website.

Open Edition matted prints are available in person at conventions and appearances. Allison Stanley travels to anime, gaming, fantasy and pop conventions and Renaissance festivals all over North America.
Covering an image with ornament is like turning it to gold, or setting it to music; it glorifies it, revealing the inner nature of the subject on its visible surface. The result is enchanting yet mysterious, for it is a revelation of something originally invisible, like a scent, a mood, or an ideology. Ornament is a metaphor, an essential element of poetry.

About ALLISON STANLEY
Allison works traditionally with a metal-nibbed dip pen and black ink, drawing from techniques of ancient illuminated manuscripts, from gold leaf to calligraphy to microscopic detail à la Book of Kells. The Rococo art movement is another influence: her signature black & white style is richly ornamental. Delicate line-work, intricate surface patterns and swirling flourishes clothe with regal elegance her deeply imaginative and symbolic designs, filling every square inch of the canvas with interest.

An admirer of Nature, Allison's personal flower garden and aquarium hobby enrich her work.

ARTISTIC PROCESS
Every drawing begins with a story. First I decide what emotions and themes I want to communicate. From there I collect references for inspiration. Sometimes these are objects, photographs of places, paintings, pages of art-books or music that fits the moment perfectly. I make these into a dream-board so I can look at all of them at once. Then I sketch, adjusting my inspiration-collage as I go.

Planning out the drawing in pencil is the most important stage. Every pencil drawing goes through a series of tracings to solidify the full expression of detail. Then, I trace a clean pencil copy of my sketch onto the final paper using a light-box. Once I have a clear idea of what sort of details and patterns will go in every part of the picture, I start inking.

The first thing I ink is usually the outside border. Next I work on the most critical parts of the artwork, like faces and key figures. Once I'm happy with these, I immerse myself inking in the rich patterns and textures, getting lost in the ethereal plains of bliss. When the whole picture is covered in swirls, I scan it at high resolution, study it under a digital magnifying glass and make sure everything is perfect.

About Zara Stanley
Zara's paintings take you to a new, yet familiar place in space and time. A pull towards the new and old. She is best known for her mixed media, free of boundaries and full of experimentation and vivid colors. Some of her favorite media to incorporate are watercolors, ink, gilding and airbrush. A fusion of line and form her work is inspired by vintage manga aesthetic, retro-vapor-wave-art and the intrinsic beauty of chaotic chance.
